OBESITY WASN’T MY FAILURE; IT WAS MY GENES

Discovering that truth wasn’t just my breakthrough, it’s become my life’s work for other women By Dr. Phyllis Pobee

The Battle Within

For most of my adult life, the mirror was my enemy. Each reflection showed a woman I barely recognised—someone carrying not just excess weight but the heavy burden of failed diets, judgment from others, and my own disappointment.

At my heaviest, I carried 45kg (100 pounds) more than my body was designed to bear. Each step was painful, both physically and emotionally.
Like many women, I had tried everything. Low-carb, high-protein, intermittent fasting, meal replacement shakes—the list of temporary solutions grew as long as my frustration.

Each new program promised results that never lasted. “It’s just about willpower,” they’d say. But something deeper was at play, something I couldn’t yet identify but instinctively felt: my body was responding differently than others to the same interventions.

This wasn’t just about aesthetics. As a physician, I knew the statistics all too well.

Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and countless other conditions.

My medical training had offered surprisingly little insight into sustainable weight management.

The standard advice—eat less, move more—felt almost insulting in its simplicity when applied to such a complex issue.

The Genetic Revelation

The turning point came during a medical conference where I encountered emerging research on genetic influences on weight management.

The presentation highlighted how specific genetic variants affect metabolism, appetite regulation, fat storage, and even how we respond to different types of exercise.

“This wasn’t pseudoscience—it was cutting-edge genomics revealing why traditional one-size-fits-all approaches so often fail.”

Intrigued both professionally and personally, I underwent comprehensive genetic testing.

The results were nothing short of revelatory. I discovered I had several genetic variants that significantly impacted my body’s response to carbohydrates, I actually thrived on eating more carbs than I had been eating on restrictive diets.

I learned my body processed certain fats inefficiently and that high-intensity exercise, which I had been forcing myself to endure, was actually counterproductive given my genetic profile..Armed with this knowledge, I created a personalised protocol aligned with my genetic blueprint.

I shifted to a diet, emphasising specific proteins and healthy fats while carefully controlling particular carbohydrates that triggered my genetic vulnerabilities.

I switched to moderate-intensity, longer-duration exercises that matched my genetic response patterns.

Most importantly, I stopped fighting my biology and started working with it.

The results were transformative.

Within twelve months, I lost 45kg (100 pounds) – not through deprivation or unsustainable methods, but through alignment with my own genetic code.

For the first time, weight loss felt effortless rather than a constant battle against my own body.

The weight stayed off because my approach wasn’t a temporary diet but a sustainable lifestyle precisely calibrated to my genetics.

From Personal Triumph to Professional Mission

My transformation sparked endless questions from friends, family, and colleagues. How had I succeeded where so many fail? The answer-personalised genetic insights -became the foundation for something much larger than my individual journey.

As a physician, I recognised an opportunity to address a critical gap in women’s healthcare. Too many of my female patients, particularly those over 30, struggled with weight issues that dramatically impacted their health, yet received little beyond basic dietary advice or, worse, dismissive attitudes about their efforts.

I founded GeneLean360°, combining my medical expertise with my personal experience to create a truly personalized approach to weight management. Our program begins with comprehensive genetic testing, analysing over 75 genetic markers related to metabolism, nutrient processing, and exercise response. We then create individualized protocols that work with each woman’s unique genetic profile rather than against it.

Building a healthcare company while maintaining my medical practice and raising two young children wasn’t easy.

The 3 AM email sessions, the conference calls during soccer practices, and the prototype development over weekends became my new normal.

But watching women experience the same revelation I had – that their weight struggles weren’t moral failings but genetic realities that could be addressed – made every exhausted moment worthwhile.

GeneLean360° is fully virtual and available internationally.
