INTERVIEW

Jane Kagan, Flourish Yoga Founder

How has your personal journey of self-discovery influenced the retreats you offer?

I manifested this fabulous life when I brought my two passions of travel and yoga together. To bring it to life, I had to battle self-doubt and unhelpful voices of criticism like, ‘Who do you think you are? No one will come…’ and so on.

To overcome this, I wrote pages of affirmations and worked on myself deliberately and constantly. I fostered self-confidence and fed the positive and starve the negative. This involved endless self-reflection, yoga, workshops, journaling, women’s circles, and more. One key was initiating and nurturing the right relationships while letting some go.

Why India? What makes it special to you?

My love affair with India began decades ago. I’ve travelled to 70 countries – but time after time it’s India that draws me back. It’s exciting, colourful, spiritual and very different from anywhere on earth. The locals are some of the sweetest, sincere, kind and generous people on the planet!

India’s culture is a unique kaleidoscope.

India’s culture is a unique kaleidoscope, a magical montage, a land of startling contrasts, baffling and constantly fascinating.

Every time I visit the motherland of yoga, I learn something, grow and get humbled and return home grateful with a full heart.

Can you tell me more about your approach to leading trips to India? What makes your experience unique?

The personal relationships I’ve built offer a unique advantage. India is a place where you need to know people, as with its vast population, navigating and experiencing the culture deeply can be challenging.

To foster a sense of community, we have a special item on the packing list: bring a poem or piece of prose that has meaning to you. These are read aloud in our circle, and sometimes people even write their own amazing poems about India!

Each person shares the backstory on why they chose that quote or poem — it’s a wonderful way to bond and understand each other. It can be funny, nearly always emotional, and always insightful. It’s a privilege to be a part of these shared experiences.

Now, if you’re looking for brown rice, tofu, and yoga at 5am, then I’m not your person.

I’m more likely to teach around 7:30am, and we’ll have cocktails before dinner! Keeping it real, I create a balance of beginner-friendly yoga classes, spirituality, visits to ashrams and temples, exploring amazing forts and palaces, and even visiting the homes of the friends I’ve made over the years.

I sometimes have access to the Dalai Lama’s summer palace and his 500-year-old meditation hall in the Himalayas – an extraordinary experience. I conduct workshops on yogic philosophy – inviting introspective reflection and journaling
